Recommendation for a simpler newer TV

My mom is 90 and the new Samsung we got for her is so newfangled even I can barely figure out its set up and functions -- especially related to SOUND as there is NO headphone jack, no Bluetooth -- only the new optic sound hookup for a wireless headphone arrangement -- which is constantly failing and needs resetting -- which she is clueless about.

Do there even exist nowadays televisions that are not so computer-modern high-maintenance 2001-Space-Odyssey delicate?

We're constantly having to go over to her house and f_ck with the set to get things functioning again as she can't hear without the headphones -- only for her to hit the wrong button on the remote while alone, and all is lost.

Thanks!

Who should get a COVID-19 test (in mid-May, in Massachusetts)?

My city (a close-in Boston suburb) is offering COVID-19 tests (viral, not antibody) to all residents, regardless of symptoms. I have no symptoms and probably lower-than-average risk of exposure but I'm considering getting tested. In a perfect-except-for-coronavirus world, who would be getting tested, and how often?

Presumably if my city Board of Health is offering these tests, they want residents to be taking them - our infection rate is pretty high. That said, I am probably at low risk of exposure relative to the average resident of my city. We're two-person household with no one working outside the home; I go out to buy food about once a week and take my spouse to medical appointments about every other week. Our city has a substantial working-class and immigrant population who are living/working in more dangerous conditions. Some of our neighboring cities/towns have even much higher rates of infection but we live on the other side of town from those communities and don't do our shopping there.

If I call and I'm able to get an appointment right away I guess I won't worry about it but if there's a backlog I'm not sure whether *I* ought to be getting tested. Is this the kind of broad testing that needs to happen to get positive test rates down to a manageable level, or should I skip getting tested for now and leave my slot and swab available for my higher-risk neighbors who are living in more crowded households and/or working outside their homes? I have basically zero concern that I'm actually infected, though of course if I'm infected and asymptomatic that would be really important to know. My husband tested negative about a month ago and has had no COVID-19 symptoms and minimal opportunities for exposure since - would it make sense for him to be tested?

Personal considerations aside, I'm mostly curious about what an optimal testing strategy (in the absence of test shortages) looks like, and given that the availability and accessibility of tests has changed so much over the past couple of months it's hard to get a straight answer about this. Articles, tweet-threads, etc. are all welcome on this topic!

Looking for summarization of audio of 2-hour meeting (Anytown, USA)

My employer is used to meetings in person, but during the CoronApocalypse has begun taking meetings in Zoom like many others. I just got through with a 2-hour (actually 1:51) meeting and my employer would like a summary -- not a transcription, but a summary -- of what was said. The idea is that they would be able to look at this summary and recall the flow of the discussion, what people were communicating at different points, we do not need word-for-word.

Challenges: (1) Recorded via a voice dictation stood up next to a laptop.
(2) 4 voices doing most of the talking, with a few others occasionally coming in. Unfortunately the main voices interrupt and try to talk over each other, which went poorly over Zoom. Fortunately the voices are distinct, and I can let you know who's who so you can label them appropriately.
(3) Some technical jargon related to construction, land/soil shifting and the law regarding buildings.

Let me know your estimate for this work, and when we reach agreement I can send you an 80MB MP3 file through Dropbox or Google Drive.

Deadline: done by this Friday evening

We also have another meeting with the same people scheduled for next week.

By sevenyearlurk in "So how's that work from home working out for you at home?" on MeFi

My work has been doing mandatory, camera-on videoconference "socials" every Friday -- scheduled at 4pm just to twist the knife. I hate them so much and finally told my manager I'm not going to attend anymore. People seem to think that because we're working from home, they're free to push on the boundaries between work life and private life in a way that is super uncomfortable for me and it has definitely been adding to my COVID stress in isolation.

But digging through my old sheet music I found a midcentury piano treatment that made it much more melancholy and interesting, so I decided to give the tune a synthesizer treatment and marry it up to the vocals to see if I couldn't do some damage. 03 - crows happen - vampire deer by pyramid termite

my daughter has a treefull of crows outside her window and she's convinced they're as interested in her as she is in them she's sure they are her friends i've tried to tell her that i'm not sure they're really all that interested in her, but i don't really think that's getting through to her - and i don't know whether she really understands the current situation - why she has to stay home, why her dad had to stay in quarantine for 14 days just because he was a little sick, why her dad was worried about what was going to happen i guess this song is about all that i can't tell you if the crows like you even though you believe they talk to you they were created for another world but maybe we pretend that it's not our world too fly around and looking for a meal fly around and looking for a summer deal but it's april and where we live everything takes so long to happen well, it's not much fun, wondering if i'll be gone i can't even go for a walk on the lawn the days all count to the last fade away but then again, it's always really been that way do you think the crows don't think about all that? somehow i think they do - the way they gather at their friend lying there, complaining everything more or less has to happen but with any luck, it will warm up a little and i think my hourglass isn't ready to settle we can go out and watch the crows once again and you can tell me that they are your friends one day we'll get to walk out and feel free and not think about the things that could be we can be like crows and bluff our way through all the things, good and bad, that happen and the secret to life, so i've been told is you keep lucking out and then you find yourself old and you wonder, what the hell did i do with all that time? and it didn't make much sense, and it didn't even rhyme and if i gave you a ring for surety some crow would go and grab it and hide it in a tree and forget about it - that crow and you and me just more of those things that happen

Vetrinary degree or science degree?

My daughter wants to work in wildlife conservation: research, management, and policy. Which degree would be better for a career in wildlife: veterinary (with a big debt) or master's in environmental biology? She planned for years to go to veterinary school, but then was waitlisted at the one offering in-state tuition (still a lot). So she talked herself out of vet school and applied for two masters in ecological biology (or biological ecology, idk) programs in Germany, where tuition is free. She got really excited about those. Then the vet school called and accepted her!

There are big pros and cons to either plan, but she is only 21 and is thinking about the next few years of school. I want her to look beyond that to what she wants to do with her life.

I have two new N-95 masks. Ok to use them or not?

My husband and I were given two N-95 masks by the wife of a (retired) doctor from church when C19 was barely making headlines. She said he had a couple of boxes from his practice. Is it legal for us to use them if we *must* go out? I am immunocompromised, if that makes any difference. My husband is not. I understand the moral argument for not using them. Is it worth taking just two to drop off at a medical office or hospital? We are in a mid-sized city in the southeast, not a big city like NYC.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

My Town, Chi-Town

Chicago is experiencing a reversal of the great migration that propelled African Americans northward in search of opportunity in the first half of the 20th century. Since 2000, a quarter-million black Chicagoans have left. The reasons include decades of bad policy and broken promises on affordable housing, education and public safety.

On this episode of Reveal, we team up with the Data Reporting Lab in Chicago to examine how trauma care teams have done more than law enforcement to reduce the gun homicide rate and with The Chicago Reporter to describe how activists are pushing back against the shutdown of 50 public schools at once.

My Nostalgia is back with Streets of Rage 4

My Nostalgia is back with Streets of Rage 4

abduzeedoMay 06, 2020

I grew up playing video games. My first console was the Atari 2600. The games were quite primitive, literally a few pixels on the screen moving. Remember, that was the 80s. In the 90s my brother and I got the Sega Mega-Drive (Genesis in US). It was a massive improvement in graphics. A 16bit console, whoah! There are incredible games, however the one that marked was Streets of Rage. I remember seeing some kids playing at this shop and I was blown away. I wanted to play it. We got the game a few weeks later and we used to play it all the time. The soundtrack was phenomenal. Fast-forward a few years and the second installment was released. Everything was better. Graphics, music. My love for the franchise was renewed till this day. I have both games on my phone and tablet.

Last week Streets of Rage 4 was released. The long awaited release for me since I learned it was in the works. I got it for the Switch and have been playing every single day and my expectations, which were very high, were met. The game is awesome. The pixelated graphics are no longer. The creators of the series decided to adopt a hand drawn clean look and it works really well. The graphics are beautiful, the scenarios have that 80s gritty look and are full of details. The music doesn’t disappoint either. I’ve been actually listening to the soundtrack on Spotify.

As you can see, I am a fan and this game deserves a feature here on Abduzeedo.

Streets of Rage

Streets of Rage, known as Bare Knuckle (ベア・ナックル Bea Nakkuru) in Japan, is a trilogy of beat 'em up games developed and published by SEGA in the 1990s.

Famously known for its non stop action and electronic dance influenced music - scored by Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima - the series has gained the status of cult classic throughout the years. It is considered one of the best beat 'em up series of all time. After many years, Axel and Blaze are finally picking up the fight where they left.

Featuring hand-drawn visuals from the team behind 2017’s gorgeous Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap remake, Streets of Rage 4 builds upon the classic trilogy’s gameplay with new mechanics, a fresh story and a gauntlet of dangerous stages with a serious crime problem. Streets of Rage 4 recalls classic gameplay but it stands as an entirely original arcade-style romp thanks to the expertise of Guard Crush Games and Dotemu.

Whether players gang up with a friend or clean up the city solo, Streets of Rage 4 is a skull-bashing, chicken-chomping delight all set to a thumping soundtrack sure to get your blood pumping.
